Everytime you are showering, you found some of your hair are falling out on the floor. At this point, you start to make some speculations. The first thing you may blame is the shampoo you are using. You may start to think that you are using a wrong shampoo. However, this speculation is understandable since shampoo is the second liquid (beside water) that has a direct contact with your scalp and hair.
Does using wrong shampoo cause hair loss?
Actually, the answer for that question is a No. Basically, shampoo has the same function as soap, for cleaning purpose. The author of book ‘Have A Great Hair Day’ said that shampooing hair does not lead to hair fall. An hair expert named Jawed Habib also states that hair fall is not caused due to shampoos. Shampoo is used as a cleaning liquid (generally, although dry shampoos are available) to remove some dirt like excess sebum and environmental pollutan from our hair. That’s why unless in a rare condition, shampoo has nothing to do with the hair loss.
The question is : What kind of “rare condition” is it?
Actually, there is no way for a shampoo to be a direct or the main cause of hair loss. But if your hair loss along with itchy sensation, it may an allergic reaction to the shampoo. Allergies tend to cause itching and rash symptoms and can cause hair loss.
Using the wrong type of shampoo also certainly damages your hair and may lead to hair fall in a long time by weakening it from the root. So, it is essential that you pick the right shampoo for your hair.
Before you pick the right shampoo, the first thing you need to know is your hair type. You can identify your hair :
- Oily
Scalp gets greasy in a few days but the ends are dry. - Dry
Rough hair which tangles easily and is frizzy. - Normal
Just a normal type, your hair is not too dry or too oily in texture. - Damaged
It has split-ends, also has dandruff problems. - Limp
This type of hair falls flat and does not have much volume.
If you have known your hair type, you can decide which type of shampoo you should use, and it will reduce the risk of allergic reaction or another problem that may lead to hair loss.
Identify the real cause
Sometime the cause of your hair loss is not the shampoo. The reason you may notice your hair is falling out more when you are in the shower is because you are focused on it, so it is more noticeable than if your hair had fallen when you were in the other places. So it seems like this hair loss related to your shower time and your shampoo.
The hair loss may be simply caused by the telogen phase of your hair cycle. Normal hair production involves three separate stages or phases. Anagen (growth), catagen (transition) and telogen (hair production rests). At the end of third phase, the hair makes room for new hair to grow by falling out. On average women lose around 100 hairs per day but this can increase during the shedding phase of the hair cycle which lasts around 1-2 weeks. At this phase, it is totally normal to see a little extra hair fall approximately every six weeks because of this cyclical process.
In short, shampoo is not the main cause of hair loss. But through one way or another, it may cause allergic reactions with the shampoo that lead to hair loss. Remember that if the hair loss that happen to you is getting worse, for example it has been happened for longer than a couple of weeks, you have to visit a hair loss specialist for an expert opinion. They will give you personal treatment recommendations to help prevent further hair fall and regrow your hair.
