Black, please! Or White, please! We heard that almost every morning in a restaurant or café. People in majority love to drink coffee, either white or black while having their breakfast. Coffee is indeed good for health but it actually can do more than just perk people up in the morning. Research showed that coffee can also breathe a new lease of life into dull unhealthy hair, increasing the shine and adding depth to dark hair. Unfortunately, you won’t see these effects just sipping a cup of coffee.

Things that coffee can do to your hair

Coffee mostly contains a lot of caffeine. There are many studies said that caffeine is good for you health. What people don’t know, caffeine in coffee is also effective in stimulating not only your mind and body but also your hair roots by improving its structure and growth. Don’t believe this fact? Try to check the ingredients in several shampoos and haircare products that you buy in the store; you will find this element there. Why is it important? The truth is the length and the quality of hair depends on upon the health of the hair follicles. The healthier the follicles are the quality of the hair will be better.

Benefits of caffeine for hair

There several benefits that caffeine in coffee can do to your hair, from treatment to hair loss until treatment to make your hair shinier and manageable. Just below this paragraph are several benefits of caffeine for hair:

  • Treats hair loss

Caffeine, when applied, penetrates in the hair root and stimulates them. Not only that it can prevent male baldness and hair loss often happens to male over mid-thirties but also can stimulate the hair roots in women’s scalp and trigger stronger hair growth.

  • Restores hair growth

Research by the International Journal of Dermatology indicated that treatment with caffeine resulted in the increase in average growth around 46% of hair follicles and also extended its life cycle by 33%. This is because of caffeine, considered as a stimulant for hair follicles, blocks the effect of DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a male hormone which damages the hair follicles and responsible for causing male baldness.

  • Helps to manage hair

Besides straitening the hair locks, caffeine products also add natural shine to hair and make them more manageable, easy to comb and add more depth to dark hair.

Caffeine is not only good for women’s hair but also men’s. About 30% of male suffers from baldness every year. This is caused by a male hormone called DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which affects hair follicles. Consequently, it makes the follicles become smaller and smaller and finally disappear, causing baldness. By using caffeine treatment, research reported that it can reduce the hair fall and strengthen the hair root, preventing baldness.

If drinking coffee won’t bring many benefits to hair, what to do?

Some people are mistaken by thinking that drinking coffee often will bring benefit to their hair. To be honest, it will only work for topical application and not to the consumption of a large amount of coffee or caffeinated beverages. If drinking it isn’t bring many benefits to hair, what is the best way to process coffee for hair treatment? Well, you can make it into something like this:

  • Hair mask

Take each 1 tablespoon of honey and olive oil. Then, add 2 teaspoons of coffee powder to them. Mix it well until it forms a smooth paste. Apply that paste to your hair until your scalp evenly and leave it be for about 20 minutes (for the best result, cover it with a shower cap) before washing and rinsing it off. Applying this method will make hair softer and shinier.

  • Hair rinse

First, brew coffee, after that, turns off the heat and allow it to cool down. When it’s cool down, use it as a hair rinse and make sure you apply it evenly. Then, let it rest for 5 minutes before washing and rinsing it off with water. This method will make your hair smoother, silkier and darker.

  • Hair oil

Take 2 cups of your favorite hair oil (recommended extra virgin olive oil) in a small saucepan. Add 1/4th cup of roasted coffee beans. Put the lid on and let them blend and cook over low heat for about 6-8 hours. Don’t forget to stir and check on the mixture every one hour to ensure it isn’t burning. When it’s done, turn off the heat and use a strainer to strain the oil 3-5 times to remove the coffee beans completely. Lastly, store the coffee oil in a clean glass container in the refrigerator or cool away from the sunshine. Many hair experts considered coffee oil as an effective means to increase blood circulation in the scalp and stimulate the hair roots. It’s also rich in phytosterols, a substance that is good and has an effect to fight free radical in the blood vessels. No wonder it is used in many branded cosmetics and sunscreens products as well!
