Robert Jackson

Dr. Jackson is Professor Emeritus of Medicine in the Division of Dermatology at the University of Ottawa. His major interests in dermatology have been morphology, skin cancer, histopathology, teaching and dermatological history.

Dr. Jackson completed his dermatology training in Montreal and Minneapolis. He started his dermatological practice in Ottawa in 1958. He has served in many capacities in Canadian and United States dermatological organizations. He has been President of the Canadian Dermatology Association and was its Secretary-Treasurer for five years. In the American Academy of Dermatology he has been Chairman of the Membership Committee and Deputy Director of Education of the National Program of Dermatology in the United States.

Honours include Queen Elizabeth Commemorative Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977, the 5th Award of Merit by the Canadian Dermatology Association in 1989, the Excellence in Clinical Teaching from PAIRO in 1992, and the President's Cup from the CDA in 2002.

Outside of his scholarly activities, Dr. Jackson is an expert needle-pointer and woodlot operator. Morphological Diagnosis of Skin Disease: A Study of the Living Gross Pathology of the Skin, published in 1998, is the definitive English text on what skin diseases look like. He has written over 100 refereed papers on this subject and on skin cancer and dermatological history. He has been a contributor to the lexicon on dermatology in Canada, United States and internationally. His knowledge of Sir Jonathan Hutchinson is recognized throughout the world.
