Joel Cohen

Dr. Joel L. Cohen is a Board Certified dermatologist with fellowship training in Mohs Micrographic surgery through the American College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology. A native of Michigan and a third-generation dermatologist, he attended Brandeis University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude with a degree in history, and awarded the Steinberg Prize for achievement in history and science. He received his MD from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, where he received several honors, and was the recipient of the auxiliary board’s award for excellence in health care delivery services.

Following an internship in general surgery, Joel began his residency in dermatology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, where he was acknowledged with the outstanding resident award in his final year of training. He was also appointed to serve as the resident representative to the American Academy of Dermatology’s FDA task force for a three- year term (1998-2001).

Joel continued his subspecialty training with a dermatologic surgery fellowship emphasizing Mohs, laser, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He has participated in two clinical trials with BOTOX pioneers Jean and Alastair Carruthers. He is the author of nine medical publications, and is currently writing a book chapter. Joel continues to participate in clinical trials, and has been appointed a BOTOX Cosmetic National Trainer. He is also a speaker for several pharmaceutical companies. Joel is founder of AboutSkin Dermatology and DermSurgery, and is on the volunteer faculty at the University of Colorado serving as an Asst. Clinical Professor of Dermatology.

He is married to Goldie Cohen, a pediatrician who is currently a fellow in Adolescent Medicine at the University of Colorado Denver Children’s Hospital. Together, they enjoy skiing, hiking, biking, and studying art and history.
